The Comforts Of Home In Your Hotel

When looking for accommodations for your family vacation, what do you usually look for? No matter where you are, isn't it that you would look for comfort for your family first? I for one would usually look into the hotel room's size, and the services available. It should be clean, with amenities that my little girl can also enjoy, is accessible, and will of course allow me to unwind and relax. It also must have good reviews from people who have actually stayed in that hotel. It should also have hotel bar supplies that meet my expectations, a good selection of wine and a modern yet subdued ambience conducive for conversations.

I would always appreciate a hotel that offers a welcome service to its guests. It gives it a more personal touch. It could be a bottle of wine, or a small basket of sweets and chocolates to nibble on when you have nothing to do in particular or complimentary drinks at the bar. It need not be a five-star hotel for you to enjoy luxury in your hotel room... We once stayed in a hotel that was really nice. We were able to book it at a very reasonable price. The room was very charming and the bath supplies had me thinking of this hotel supply online that also offered almost exactly the same products. 

Come to think of it, if you are a hotel operator and would love to upgrade or update your hotel supplies, the Atlanta hotel supply can just be the right shop for you. It would be a great idea to start a business in the hotel industry. With all the hotel rooms that we have slept in and the experiences, good and bad, they will surely help in designing a place that guests can call their home away from home.

The Shape Of You

Two Sundays ago, we received a very unexpected news. A news that my father in law suddenly collapsed and was critical in the hospital. My husband had to fly immediately to the Philippines but my mother in law told me that it was the same case as Uncle Nilo's. Tatay has always had hypertension and was diligent in monitoring his BP and was very careful with what he eats. He refused however to take his maintenance medication because he felt his BP would worsen/shoot up if he failed or missed a day to take them. But then it was too late for that... :(

Tatay passed away last Tuesday due to high blood pressure aneurysm. What it is, and how it can be diagnosed and prevented you can find here.

It was such a sad and bitter day for us, especially to his two children who are both based abroad: my husband who is Germany-based and his brother who is UK-based. I guess it must have been a very long journey for my husband. I honestly wished we could be with him when he flew to the Philippines or that my brother in law can also fly back home to see Tatay for the last time but certain circumstances prevented us from doing so.

My heart still grieves at losing him... It was barely five months when we last saw him. He was always so happy and always laughing, making jokes and always tickling our little girl. Making sure his granddaughter is comfortable and happy. He always puts the needs of his family first before his needs.

Now he is gone. Finally resting and no longer feeling pain. I pray that you are now resting in peace Tatay. And I pray that the Lord will comfort the loved ones you have left behind: Nanay (my mother in law), Kuya Leo and Ate Ann and Luis, Hanhan and us.

Coincidentally, I found this song from Jewel entitled "In The Shape Of You" which perfectly describes how I felt with your passing away... I am thankful for the time given me to get to know you more. Thank you for everything... Coming home to the Philippines will never be the same again without your laughter. :( Indeed, there's a hole in our hearts in the shape of you.

Your passing was unexpected Tatay... May you find rest in the Lord, our God.

Fireworks Are Heavenly

I have always enjoyed fireworks shows... I was in awe when I saw my first spectacular and long fireworks show at the Showa Kinen park in Tachikawa, Tokyo in Japan. It was the summer of 2007. Then came the string of fireworks festivals in the succeeding years.

Each firework show is unique and beautiful in its own way and each never ceases to bring home that feeling of awe and wonder at the beauty that pyrotechniques can offer.

When we moved to Germany, I thought I would be missing out on the fireworks show but I guess I am way too favored when we found there is an annual three-day fireworks show called "Flammende Sterne" happening every summer at Scharnhauser Park in Ostfildern. Year after year, we go to the park to witness it, except for this year since we went on a summer holiday.

Since I wasn't able to watch this spectacle, I felt my summer went by incomplete. But then I saw this video shared on Facebook about a fireworks show competition held in Berlin and was again awed. I felt like I was there watching the fireworks myself. And on top of that, it was designed by Filipino contingents. I am just so happy to see it so I am sharing it here. I hope you like it.

A Series of Beautiful and Unfortunate Events

It was a nice fine Saturday. We wanted to go hiking again before it gets too cold for our little girl so we decided to go mountain hiking up in Nebelhorn in Oberstdorf. The drive from where we live normally takes just two hours but we got stuck in traffic due to the high volume of vehicles who also wanted to do a "last day out" before the summer break ends.  The long drive got the husband irritable. We got to our destination at around two in the afternoon. We only have at least two and half hours left for our hike before the cable cars stop running. Of course we could always hike on the way down from the peak but we also had to consider the temperature and the terrain. It is okay if it were only me and my husband... but if you are with a little girl who likes to complain if she doesn't feel like doing something, then that is another story.

We reached the peak of Nebelhorn via cable car and then hiked our way down to the next station of Höfatsblick. It was only a kilometer stretch but with the steepness and the loose stones along the trail, it took us over an hour to hike as we stopped here and there for some photos. There was also a lot to see: alpine flowers in purple, yellow and white, and the  The hike down from the peak also saw us discovering the home of marmots. We spied four marmots in total and the little went nearer the rocky formations to get a closer look.

As we were moving on towards the Bergstation, I then noticed that my sunglasses were missing.. And that's when tempers flared... It's unfortunate really so my husband had to hurry and climb back up, tracing our tracks. It was nowhere to be found. I just hope it went to better hands.

Although the trip didn't turn out as wonderful as we expected it to be, I am still thankful. For the beauty of nature that we were able to behold. For the time given to spend with one another. For the memories albeit not so good....

What I Like (and Don't Like) in Coffee Shops

I love coffee and enjoy going coffee shop hopping. There is just something about coffee that makes my day. It is not just the coffee though, it is also the ambience in the coffee shop, the furnishings, the layout, the perks that they offer.

I love coffee shops that are spacious and airy, with tables and chairs and bar stools so arranged in a manner that allows free flow and unobstructed movement of the customers and the shop crew. I love contemporary design so I would really opt for a coffee shop that has contemporary bar stools for when I want to enjoy my coffee alone and couches that will not "swallow" you when I have company. I would love it if the stool has a back rest that is neither too high nor too low so that I could also lean if I want to, and has a foot rest, adjustable height and can be swivelled 360° for a more relaxing sit. Something just like the Harmony bar stool.

I love it when the main entrance of the coffee shop has an impression of inviting to it... I don't mind if the shop's busy but I just don't like it if I have to wait for some 10-15 minutes for my coffee or line up to order one. Call me lazy but I like it better if a waiter comes to take my order. :)

Of course, I would prefer if the coffee shop offers free WIFI to its customers. Most coffee shops already do. It would also be great if charging your laptop or other gadgets is free of charge but I would understand if some coffee shops charge you for a certain fee. After all, electricity is an expensive commodity and if you are only going to order a cup of coffee and stay at the coffee shop for hours on end, the shop could go bankrupt because of high operating costs.

I also like the fact that some coffee shops now have a point systems or memberships that allow its loyal customers to enjoy discounts and perks.

A Friend-ly Gathering

It has been four years (or maybe more!) since I last saw my beautiful friends from the university and so when the chance came for us to meet, we didn't let the chance pass us by. I also wanted to hand over the shoe box of pens and pencils I have collected from my friends and classmates at graduate school in Germany for our little project Pens of Hope in Davao, so it was just the perfect timing.

The little girl decided to lie down while waiting for my friends to arrive.

It was a Saturday and we decided to meet at Yellow Hauz, a quaint coffee shop in Davao City. While waiting, me and little girl ordered some refreshments. After a few minutes, Kikit and her hubby Dan, arrived carrying snorkel gear... They just came from a day of snorkeling at Paradise Beach Resort at the Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS). It must have been very nice to be with schools of fish, I so envy them.. Hehehe!

Anyway, before we forgot, we handed over our shoe box of pens and pencils and Kikit asked to make a souvenir shot with my little girl as the model.

After three pots of hot tea, two other girl friends, Ate Tess and Shugar (along with Sweet, her little girl) arrived. It was almost time for dinner to we transfered to Matina Town Square and opted to dine at Kanto bar and restaurant.

Indeed, it was a wonderful evening filled with sensible talk, laughter and wonderful company. It may have been years but it is heartwarming to know that the friendship remains. Even if we grow in numbers (family members are always welcome in the group) and we live far apart, it makes me smile to know that when we come home again, we have another family to come home to... our SICO family. :)

Glass Nail FIles and Other Souvenirs from Prague

The capital of Prague in the Czech Republic is one of the most charming and interesting European cities I have visited so far. I loved the charm of the old architecture and the history behind them, even the eerie and scary ones. There is just something magical about Prague, perhaps because it is home to the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague, who is believed to have protected the city even to this day. 

I enjoyed going to the open market taking place in the weekend, which was lined up with porcelain dolls, wood items, and glassware among others. If you want to take a piece of the Czech Republic with you, there is much to choose from. The main streets where there is high tourist traffic are lined with stores a variety of items like simple marionette puppets and porcelain dolls,  to interesting matryoshka dolls, which are I think of Russian origin but are made and sold in Prague anyway to useful items like glass foot files or luxurious glass accessories from Mont Bleu. Czech glass is also a very famous souvenir item. But because we have a child who loves to play all over the house, we opted to buy other items instead.

We stayed for three days and two nights in this beautiful city and went on a sightseeing tour. Famous landmarks that we visited included the Prague Castle, the Jewish quarter, the New Town with the Wenceslas Square at its heart, the charming Old Town and the picturesque Lesser Town (Mala Strana) and went on a stroll across Charles Bridge to enjoy yet more wonderful panoramic views of the city. 

Our visit to Prague was of course not complete without visiting the church of the Infant Jesus of Prague. Guided with a map, we managed to find our way. It was actually not difficult to find. There I brought an Infant Jesus dressed in white to place in our altar here at home. We also bought a book about the story of how the Infant Jesus of Prague came to be.

Popular Gifts for Dad

It is almost Father's Day, at least here in Germany. Did you know that Germany is the only country that celebrates Father's Day (Vatertag) differently from the rest of the world? Father's Day is celebrated on the Ascension Day, the Thursday forty days after Easter. It is also a Federal holiday here so that it is really a day worth celebrating with the family.

But no matter where you are in the world, we do celebrate Father's Day. It may be celebrated in different months, but it is a day that we take the time to honor and thank our Fathers.  What better way to do this than to give them something that shows our appreciation for all their hard work, support, guidance and love.

Preparing for Graduate School?

The competition is tough when it comes to admission to international graduate programs in prestigious and elite universities. That is why a good preparation is needed in order to get in. Being intelligent is no longer enough these days. It takes strategy, good recommendations from professors and a lot of hard work in order to be admitted into your desired program.

I never got the chance to do a gmat review when I was applying for a master's program at the university so I never will know what it was like. Fortunately for me, the graduate program that I applied to did not require it. But I bet it would have been a very different experience.

Reviewing for GMAT is not only about memorizing. It is also about how dedicated and enthusiastic your instructors are. If you have instructors who have the drive and the passion, I bet you too will be driven to do your best. Studying is actually fun if you know how to go about studying. There are actually strategies that gmat preparation centers teach that one will never learn while studying alone. Diagnostics, mock tests and feedback are also vital in gmat review preparation. Although they are not the real thing, it helps you to gauge how much you have learned and how much you still need to hurdle to succeed and attain your desired GMAT score.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

Today is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today, we remember how Mary said YES to God, that despite being an ordinary person, God's grace will always be gifted to those who are humble enough to accept it.

Laternenfest 2011

Laterne, Laterne, Sonne, Mond und Sterne... so goes the song that my little girl learned last year at the Kindergarten during the Laternenfest.

I am so excited for my little girl's Laternenfest this year. She really had fun at last year's Laternenfest and I am not surprised why.. It's scheduled on the 8th of November, Tuesday at 5:30 in the evening. I know my little girl is excited too and I know why... because it means creating our very own lanterns. There are so many craft ideas available online and I can't wait to create a lantern or two for my little girl. I am even tempted to order some books so that it will be easier for me and my little girl to choose.

There are some really good books that I found on the Internet and I am very much tempted to buy them. Although they are in German, I think I can manage to follow the instructions. But then again, there are also free instructions and patterns available on the Internet so I might just as well make use of them. I can even use my own creativity to create something original for my little girl. Last year, I went to the Kindergarten to make our very first lantern there. It was an Indian girl that we created and it was fun making crafts with my little girl although I did most of the work.

This year, I am planning to do it here at home. All I need to do is buy the materials from a craft shop.

I don't know what kind of lantern we will be creating this year but the following are my options:

All Is Well

A few weeks ago, I really had this pain in my lower abdomen. I thought it was just gas and just ignored it. But it was persistent and when it didn't go away in the next couple of days, I went to my doctor for a check-up. It not your ordinary lower abdomenal pain and she recommended that I go to see a gastroenterologist and a gynecologist so that everything will be covered. It could be my appendix, my large intestines, my kidney or my reproductive system.

Luckiy, I got an appointment for an ultrasound scan at the gastroenterologist clinic. Everything looked good and normal, the specialist said except for my right ovary. It was a bit enlarged, he said, so that I really need to see a gynecologist. Just hearing the word "enlarged" got me worrying to the nth level, and so did the husband. The also checked my urine and the results were normal. They also took some blood for further tests. On our way home with my daughter, I had the sudden fear of the unknown. I was already having thoughts of all the what if's that I had to stop myself. I had to stop thinking about all the nonsense because I know that God will always be with us and He won't forsake us.

So I got an appointment for my gynecologist last Monday. By then, the pain has thankfully subsided and nothing can be seen when another ultrasound scan was performed. My left and right ovaries all looked normal in the scan. The doctor could not explain why I had pains because he cannot see anything. He mentioned that I could be pregnant but that it was still too small to be visible in the ultrasound scan or I could be not.

At least my mind was already put at ease, knowing that everything inside of me is functioning well. Right now, I am entertaining the idea that I could indeed be pregnant but that still remains a question. I am still too reluctant to do a home pregnancy test because I don't feel any symptoms yet. But yes, all is well. God has always been and is always with us.

Happy Fronleichnam!

Today is both a national and religious holiday here in Germany, and in some other European countries as they celebrate Fronleichnam or Corpus Christi. Here in Germany, it is celebrated on the Thursday after the Trinity Sunday and in some places, on the following Sunday. Corpus Christi or officially known in the Catholic Church as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ does not commemorate an event in the life of Jesus Christ but celebrates the Body of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. I guess that is the essence of this celebration.

Text translation: "Jesus, strengthen our faith."

While it is of religious origin, Germany still celebrates it to this day although I doubt that many understand the meaning of the celebration nor do they know the reason behind this day being a "holiday". One can see though the Catholic and Anglican churches having different religious activities to celebrate this day. And in some "Dorfs" or small villages especially here in Baden-Wuerttemberg, this religious tradition is still very much celebrated in a colorful procession or parade. They even have very colorful flower carpets with different religious images and messages.

Cool Tees

If there is one fashion clothing that never goes out of style, that will have to be tees. It has evolved so much in the last hundred years or so and yet, it has always remained popular and is one of the best-selling in the clothing industry. Perhaps it is because it has become the basic when it comes to clothing.

Station of the Cross for Children

So it is Holy Week. I wanted to do something spiritual for a change but I let the opportunity to attend a recollection pass. It was scheduled yesterday and I opted to just stay home and do housework instead. There will be a Pabasa on Thursday and Friday though and I know that we will be there to attend it. It really is different how they observe Holy Week in a foreign land. It is very much different than in the Philippines and although there are some areas that really do observe the Holy Week and perform Passion plays, the atmosphere is just different from what I have been used to as a child.

Looking back at the Catholic traditions that I have grown up to, I feel so blessed and lucky. I also want my daughter to grow up with such kind of experience because it is an important part of our being Catholics and Christians. I guess now that she is a bit bigger, I can slowly teach her about the bible and about who Jesus Christ is. And this Holy Week, I want to do the Stations of the Cross with her. I found this series of videos on YouTube that will just be the perfect material. Then we can all pray together as a family come Good Friday.

CC: Lost In The Black Forest

It has been a while since I made an update and a CC entry for this blog. It's high time that I start blogging again, don't you think? Yesterday's theme for Couple's Corner is just the right timing and although late, here I am typing my entry away.

 

Us before we got lost in the middle of the Black Forest.

It was June, the summer of 2009 when we went for a drive and visited Baden-Baden, near the Black Forest. Because we had a navigation system, it was quite easy to get to our destination even if it was our first time to go there. We went sightseeing the entire day and booked for an overnight stay at a Gasthaus (local hotel) near Freudenstadt, a small town south of the Black Forest. And because it was summer, the sun would usually set at around 9:00 PM so we had ample time to drive through the forest for our hotel.

We were finally able to check in at around 11:00PM. Whew!

We were almost near our destination when we made a wrong turn. Perhaps the GPS can no longer recognize the dirt road that was leading up the mountains so it just kept saying, "Please follow the arrows on the display." And followed it, we did. We saw a billboard showing the vicinity map of the area and that was when we knew that we were lost. And it was in the middle of the forest! It was getting dark so we still continued to drive. I started to panic when it was already really dark and all we could see are the logs piled at the side of the road and the trees and the road that were made visible by the car head lights. We went back on our way and luckily found a local restaurant in the middle of the forest. Strange, huh? Good thing the staff can speak English and told us which road to take. They also told us to come back if we still can't find our way so that they can call a taxi that we can follow.

It was really a very scary experience. Hubby and I could only look at each other's eyes as if in agreement that we had an invisible passenger that night who wanted to be dropped off in that area. Thinking about that incident still gives me goosebumps.

I learned about this song from an aunt friend here in Germany. I haven't heard of this one before so I looked it up on YouTube as she suggested. The song is in the form of a chant, that is why it is famous among the younger generation.

My Little Girl's Imaginary Friend

Does your child ever talk about someone very fondly but you don't know of? Chances are, your child has an imaginary friend.

I really am enjoying the stage where my little girl is right now. She has come to have an imaginary friend she calls "Baby" and she usually comes out before we go to bed or everytime we come inside the bedroom. It started a few weeks back when husband and I decided to be strict on our little girl's TV-time. We have observed that she had been watching too much cartoons since the Christmas break and it was getting difficult to get her to sleep at night so we had to firm with her. Thankfully, it worked thanks to Baby. She was actually the one who imagined "Baby" and she would take care of her as if it were her own child. Before we sleep, she would change Baby's diapers, telling me, "Mommy, Baby Kaka macht." Kaka means poop and macht means made or did. She would make faces as she removes the diapers, an indication that for her, the poop stinks and it really is so funny. Then she would lay the Baby on her pillow and then pretend that she is setting the dining table in time for lunch. This scene is familiar to her from the Kindergarten so I can make the connection.

If ever your child has an imaginary friend, just let her be. It is part of their growing up and is an indication that your child is very creative. It could be a venue for you to understand how her mind works too, if you only observe at how she relates to her imaginary friend. Don't contradict your child by saying "stop pretending". Nor should you go all the way and include her imaginary friend in your world. Just let her enjoy the company of her friend; she'll probably grow out of this common childhood phase by around age 5.

CC: Why Are Bad Habits Hard To Break?

Now there's a good question that has got me really thinking hard. Why, indeed are bad habits hard to break? I do believe that it all depends on the individual's resolve to break such a bad habit. If you are really serious in changing that something that is not helpful and healthy in your relationship, then you would by all means rid it out of your system, by hook or by crook.

One of my bad habits is spending too much time in front of the computer and not really getting anything serious done. That's because there are lots of distractions. Facebook is one of them. So if I really have deadlines to meet, I do not open my Facebook account until I am done with my online tasks. And if I want to do something other than doing my online tasks, I try to keep away from the "office room".

Bad habits are hard to break because we do not look at them as bad in the first place. We always tend to find an excuse, petty excuses at that,  for doing them, like the reason "I just want to relax for a while so I want to connect with my friends online" or "It's just a treat for myself." Sometimes though, we forget the essentials like quality time, communicating in the real sense of the word, and prioritizing.  If we learn how to prioritize and know what's really important to us, then breaking bad habits won't be as hard as we thought it would be.
